The Workforce Development Board, in partnership with the New Canadians Centre Peterborough, has developed the Newcomers Mentorship Program. Quality mentoring leads to powerful, positive outcomes for newcomers to the Peterborough area. Additionally, mentors are able to contribute to our community's economic and social well-being while developing his/her leadership and coaching skills and gaining a better understanding of other cultures.
The Newcomers Mentorship Program is currently looking to attract volunteers who are interested in becoming mentors. It is a simple process to sign-up and is a really low committment of only 24 hours over 6 months. For further information on the program please view our brochure.

The Workforce Development Board is in the process of creating a Centre for Workforce Research & Information. The main initiative of the Centre is to develop a resource database containing information related to the workforce, economy and labour market for our service area.
This database will contain resources created by local organizations in one easy to search internet database. The Centre will also highlight new local research as it is published.

On the morning of May 26, 2009 the Workforce Development Board brought in guest speaker Max Valiquette, youth culture expert, to talk about how you can Maximize Your Multi-Generational Workforce. This is one of three Employer Breakfast Information Sessions to be held this year. Each session is to be held over breakfast with keynote speakers focusing their topics on maintaining healthy and productive workplaces. These sessions are meant to bring awarness to employers of strategies that can be used to deal with current workforce issues.

The Workforce Development Board has a new website www.whatiwant2b.ca. This website explores the careers that are in high demand now, or will be over the next 15 years in the counties of Peterborough, Northumberland and Haliburton and the city of Kawartha Lakes. This website has been presented to guidance counsellors from two of the local school boards, and career class presentations will commence in September 2009.
Employerregistry.ca is an online community connecting businesses across Ontario with elementary and high school students. By simply going to www.employerregistry.ca and registering employers can express their interest in Co-op programs, the new Specialist High Skills Major program or Career talks at local schools. After a great response from students and teachers in the inaugural year the 2nd Annual Adventures in Agriculture will take place again this year in Peterborough. In partnership with the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPAEDC) Adventures in Agriculture has been designed to introduce a variety of careers in agriculture to grade 8 students, in Peterborough County, through a series of demonstrations and educational displays.
This year the Skilled Trades Expo will take place in the City of Kawartha Lakes for the 4th year in a row. The goal of the expo is to introduce students to a variety of careers in the trades, through partipation in hands-on workshops facilitated by industry professionals. Grade 8 students will learn about the educational requirements for the different careers, the day-to-day responsibilities of each trade, and provided the opportunity to ask questions.
The Health Career Symposium exposes high school students to a variety of careers that are available in the health sector. Students are given an opportunity to speak with healthcare professionals, who provide a first-hand account of their job experiences in the health industry and offered guidance and information regarding post-secondary education and future employment opportunities. Students also will be taken on a tour of the Northumberland Hills Hospital located in Cobourg.
The Ready for Work Employment Skills Conferences prepares grade 8 students for their first work experience. Students participate in a series of workshops such as Resume Writing, Volunteering, Career Cruising, School Tour and a Career Fair.
